Savannah G8 Summit

g8 summitt Savannah-Chatham area resource for the 2004 G8 Summit. Providing news and information to the citizens, dignataries, media, and activists affected.

The City of Savannah needed a site to direct information regarding the City's role in the Group of Eight (G8) conference, scheduled for Sea Island in June of 2004.

The G8 consists of the heads of state from Canada, Russia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States. Dozens of other foreign leaders will be staying in Savannah, as well as the press corp and hundreds of activists.

The site, SavannahG8Summit.org, uses a table-less CSS based design, which allows for scalability. The online resource can be accessed via non-browser devices and is ADA compliant. It also uses a hosted content management system, so that the site can be updated from any location, in real time. RSS feeds are used to stream the site's current news to aggregators, and to receive the latest on G8 happenings from Reuters, AFP, and AP.

The site made extensive use of print style sheets (perfectly formatting the content for printing), email forms, and mobile delivery options.

Staff controlled the website using a content management system. No knowledge of web design or coding was necessary to update the site. A simple, online form (similar to sending an email) allowed authorized users to submit content.

SavannahG8Summit.org was closed in late June 2004. Response from local, national, and international political and media organizations was resoundingly positive. It served as the community's chief information distribution point, combining the City and County governments, Police, and emergency teams.
