Empowering Students to Build Websites

If you're launching a new project or initiative, having a website is a crucial component of any communication campaign. This is true if you're a big business, or a group of 4th graders in a Costa Rican village.

aerial-photo.jpgDel Mar Academy in Nosara, Costa Rica recently held an environmental awareness day, and students in each grade level worked on sustainability projects leading up to the event. One group of 4th graders chose to study a new community garden being developed at the school. In addition to researching water flow solutions, natural pest control remedies, what to plant and when to plant it, they also wanted to raise awareness about the garden.

So they asked Heideldesign to help them make a website.

We gathered with four 4th graders in the school library and set about researching WordPress themes and discussing important features of the site, such as navigation options, photography, and more.

After choosing a theme, we helped them create the pages, upload photos, and then add the content they'd already written themselves. The day before the environmental awareness event, the site was launched. And because WordPress makes it so easy to edit the pages, these students will be able to update the site in the future as the garden grows.
